Summary
Near midnight in London, Rohan surveys the ballroom of the Devil’s Mercy, a terrain he knows intimately—its tables, cameras, dealers, and players. He frames himself as the embodiment of the house, recalling that the house always wins and accepting the cost he has paid for power.
Beside Rohan atop the grand staircase, Alastair strikes his cane three times to command silence and announces that his time as Proprietor has ended. He then offers the platinum cane—symbol and scepter of authority—to Rohan, who takes it with steady composure and repeats the triple strike.
Below, the room bows in deference, signaling the elite’s acknowledgement of the new order. Without sentiment or hesitation, Rohan embraces victory, internalizing that power has a price and he has already paid it. The chapter ends with Rohan crowned in all but name: the new king of the Mercy.
