CHAPTER 81: LYRA
Overview
As Lyra anxiously waits, a brief call with her father steadies her before Grayson phones with dire news: the extraction has failed, Xander is out, but Jameson isn’t, and the boat team is gone. Grayson decides to go back in, insists Lyra keep and sell Alice’s ring to save Mile’s End, and the two confess their love before parting without good-byes.
Summary
Lyra paces, tormented by waiting and her choice not to stop Grayson earlier. Her phone rings—Keith Kane checks on her, trading quiet reassurances about home, her mother’s worry, and Cooper’s antics, giving Lyra a momentary anchor amid the uncertainty.
Grayson calls next. He reports that the operation went wrong: he and Xander escaped, but Jameson did not, and the support team expected on Rohan’s boat has vanished. Grayson says he knocked Xander out so the duchess can get him to safety, implying Grayson is still in the field.
Preparing to go back in, Grayson tells Lyra to keep Alice’s ring, sell it, and save Mile’s End. Lyra rejects the fatalism in his tone and orders him to remember who he is—relentless and capable—refusing to accept the possibility of his failure.
They exchange declarations—Grayson says he loves her; Lyra says she would choose him as part of her family. They agree on no good-byes and no regrets. The call ends, leaving Lyra with the ring, a mandate to save her home, and the knowledge that Grayson is returning to rescue Jameson.
