CHAPTER 75: LYRA
Overview
Lyra studies a photo of Katalin Aquila Reyes and recognizes a striking resemblance, cementing Katalin as the Omega. Alisa, Libby, and Lyra discuss the Ascendants’ cascading manipulations and the pointed selection of Hawthorne-adjacent Candidates. A new lead on Odette surfaces in Italy. Max solves the key-letter puzzle as a playing-card straight, spurring a search of Hawthorne House for decks.
Summary
Lyra examines the only located photo of Katalin Aquila Reyes and is struck by their uncanny resemblance. Alisa confirms Katalin died at twenty-one, with missing hospital records. Lyra connects Katalin to the Omega, recalling the note choosing someone else, and recognizes that Nora also wasn’t chosen.
Alisa frames the Crucible’s Candidates—all tied to Hawthornes—as deliberate, citing the Ascendants’ “art of the cascade” and suggesting Alice may have been forced to call this Crucible. Lyra questions who truly maneuvered her into the game. Libby, revealing a SURVIVOR tattoo, empathizes with the Gilded Blade’s aim to check abusive power. She clings to hope that Hannah, possibly the Watcher, is orchestrating a protective plan.
Lyra, frustrated by waiting and by Grayson’s distant pain, asks about Odette; Alisa shares a cautious new lead on Italy’s Adriatic coast, not Tuscany. Nash arrives with cupcakes, offering brief levity, and banters with Alisa and Libby, hinting at their usual dynamic beneath the current darkness.
Max then bursts in, announcing a breakthrough. After permuting the key letters A, J, K, Q, she identifies the correct sequence as J, Q, K, A and, with an added ten, recognizes it as a straight. The group pivots from dread to action, preparing to scour Hawthorne House for decks of cards that might advance the puzzle.
