Overview
Lyra confronts her biological father, Luiz “Tom” Reyes, seeking insight into Katalin and leverage to help find Grayson. Tom confirms Katalin is dead and once killed a frat boy he helped cover up but offers little else. His selfish detachment hardens Lyra’s resolve as she rejects him.
Summary
Lyra takes a video call from her biological father, who introduces himself as Tom. He is glib and detached, pronouncing Lyra’s name correctly but addressing her as “princess,” and he admits he agreed to help a cover-up by disappearing so others could claim he’d died. Lyra asserts that she is her mother Darby’s daughter—and the daughter of the man who raised her—not his.
Pushing past his charm, Lyra demands information on Katalin. Tom says Katalin is dead and recalls that, less than a year before she died, Katalin killed a frat boy who “deserved it,” which he helped cover up. He offers one more detail: Katalin bought a blanket for Lyra before she was born.
Tom remarks that he loved his siblings as much as he could love anyone but prefers an easy, untroubled life. He shows Lyra a beach sunrise, underscoring his detachment from loss and responsibility. Realizing he has little real help to offer and with Grayson still missing, Lyra rejects him, telling Luiz Aquila Reyes—one of his many names—that there is nothing worth looking at.
