CHAPTER 68: GIGI
Overview
Gigi wrangles Knox and Slate to help Zara decode Tobias Hawthorne’s remaining biographical keys, narrowing unknown symbols. Alisa identifies several and Oren reports Brady’s arrival.
In the hedge maze, Knox and Brady brawl and grieve Calla’s death; Knox confirms Orion is his father. Learning Nora plans to end the Blade, Brady agrees to inspect the team’s research before pursuing her.
Summary
With Toby en route to London, Gigi manages Knox and the injured Slate while worrying about Nora. She follows Zara—joined by Alisa and Oren—up the tower to examine Tobias Hawthorne’s key arrays: 73 known keys matched to life events and 34 unknowns.
Gigi sorts the unknown set: missing letter keys (B, D, S, T, W, Z), numbers (4, 11, 23), and eleven symbol keys. She identifies an eclipse and honeycomb; Slate’s touch prompts Gigi to read another key as a web. Alisa recognizes three symbols from past events and moves them to the known line, leaving eight symbolic keys still unsolved.
Oren alerts Alisa to unexpected company at the gates—Brady. To avoid publicity, they bring Brady through the hedge maze. Knox confronts him; Brady reveals Calla “failed” the Crucible. Knox confirms Calla is dead. Grief erupts into a fight.
During the clash, Knox divulges that Orion Thorp is his biological father and that Calla hid this to spare him. They connect Zella’s knowledge to Calla’s inability to let Knox and Brady go. Brady vows not to let the Blade go either. Knox says Nora has a plan to end the Gilded Blade entirely.
Accepting that Knox is staying—partly for Gigi—Brady prepares to leave after Nora. Gigi intercepts, invoking how Brady used her, and demands he first review Hawthorne House whiteboards on the Blade, mythology, constellations, and the Crucible to help protect Avery and Eve. Brady agrees to “one look.”
