CHAPTER 100: GIGI
Overview
In the aftermath of Vantage’s collapse, Gigi decides to end the family’s secrecy, ensuring Sheffield Grayson is confirmed among the dead. The public list of victims is released. Savannah reevaluates her future, and Grayson offers support. Slate returns alive but wrecked with guilt over Eve, just as Rohan arrives with a new theory.
Summary
Gigi spends night after night calling into the dark for Slate, clinging to belief despite reports that he had been captured before Vantage fell. A week passes with no sign of him, and rescue has shifted to recovery. Feeling powerless to help in Scotland, Gigi resolves to act on THE SECRET at home.
Thirteen days after the disaster, the official list of the dead is released: Eve, Toby, Freya and her mother Agnes, and Sheffield Grayson among them. Gigi has told her family everything, and with Rohan’s help, Sheffield is formally added to the list; his ring was found in the rubble. The Grayson family abandons secrecy. Savannah admits she’s quitting basketball and considering a gap year, while Grayson offers to stay as long as needed. Rohan lightens the mood despite strained tensions.
Later that night, Gigi again keeps vigil on the roof, confessing she no longer knows if Slate is alive. Slate answers from the darkness, explaining he woke drugged on the far side of the isthmus, was saved by someone, and returned to find Vantage destroyed. He is tormented that he couldn’t save Eve or even search for her body.
Gigi jumps into his arms; Slate catches her, calling her a hazard. Gigi reassures him, framing him as someone who looks for light in darkness. He calls her the bright side, but before they can say more, Rohan arrives, announcing he has a theory he believes they will want to hear.
