CHAPTER 11: LYRA
Overview
Lyra studies her father’s file and discovers a police report framing his death as a lone, financial-motive suicide with a forged note blaming Tobias Hawthorne. Crime-scene details and Lyra’s presence were erased. A PI report lists multiple aliases and photos of a man Lyra does not recognize—despite one image showing him with Lyra’s mother and baby Lyra.
Calling her mother confirms the photo’s authenticity, forcing Lyra to assert that the pictured man is not the one who took her, deepening the mystery of her father’s identity and the cover-up.
Summary
Lyra opens the file to a list of aliases, with Drakos, Reyes, and Aquila marked. The next pages are a police report declaring her father’s death a self-inflicted gunshot in a stranger’s home, with no witnesses. A note blames Tobias Hawthorne’s business practices, neatly closing the case.
Lyra, remembering the calla lily and her own presence that night, realizes the report erases both. She recalls Alice Hawthorne’s warning and, with Grayson beside her, rereads the report: identity was accepted from a driver’s license for “Thomas Valasquez,” with no forensics referenced.
Crime-scene photos match Lyra’s memory of blood and devastation, but the omega symbol on the wall is gone—erased. The victim’s effects include the license. Lyra then reaches a recent PI report, apparently commissioned to find the dead man’s daughter, and additional IDs: Thomas Aquila, Tomasso Drakos, and Tomás Reyes.
Confronted with photographs, Lyra feels nothing familiar; the man’s eyes and features are wrong. The final photo shows this same man holding a baby Lyra, standing beside Lyra’s mother. The contradiction shatters her certainty.
Lyra calls her mother on video. Her mother casually recognizes the photo as them with “Tomás.” Overwhelmed, Lyra rejects the implication and, despite the image’s authenticity, declares that this man is not the one who took her at gunpoint—insisting he is not her father—deepening the mystery of identity and the cover-up.
