CHAPTER 53: JAMESON
Overview
Jameson infiltrates the Devil’s Mercy, but Savannah crashes his one-ticket entry by invoking a mark from Rohan. Inside, the duchess warns Jameson to save his favor, while a ledger note from Alice orders him home. In the atrium, calla lilies and an obsidian–agate lemniscate point to a larger clue. Savannah calls in a debt with the duchess, receives a ring, and departs, as Zella covertly tells Jameson that a north wind is blowing.
Summary
Near midnight in London, Jameson follows precise instructions to access a hidden elevator into the Devil’s Mercy. At the last second, Savannah slips in, causing the descent to go dark and drop. Emerging into a nexus, Jameson heads down the emerald path, deducing that Rohan sent Savannah. A teenage gatekeeper confronts them, but after reading a message inked on Savannah’s skin by Rohan, he stands aside.
They reach the wagering bar. The bartender blocks Jameson from taking the ledger and delivers the duchess’s warning: save his promised favor and don’t ask what would devastate them both. He guarantees Savannah’s safety and sends her to the atrium. Jameson stays, combs the ledger, and finds a margin note in Alice’s hand: “Go home, dear boy,” confirming she anticipated his visit and implying danger and a clue within the Mercy.
In the atrium, Jameson sees Zella with Savannah and is arrested by the black‑and‑white lemniscate floor and bowls of floating calla lilies—matching flowers tied to Avery’s disappearance. Zella passes Savannah a ring; Savannah immediately runs out. The décor triggers Jameson’s connections: lilies at Hawthorne Island and his own past puzzle.
Walking the room with Zella, Jameson recalls the floor’s stones. Zella corrects him: not onyx, but obsidian paired with white agate. Recognizing those exact gemstones as significant, Jameson links them to Alice’s directive to go home, realizing the clue points beyond the Mercy.
Maintaining the duchess’s rules, Zella discreetly hides her lips and whispers, “Go home, Jameson. A north wind blows,” reinforcing Alice’s warning. Jameson leaves with his favor unspent, a sharpened focus on the lilies and obsidian–agate lemniscate, and the knowledge that Savannah has called in a debt and secured a ring from the duchess.
