CHAPTER 5: LYRA

Lyra and Grayson track Toby Hawthorne to his sparse Texas home and confront him over Avery’s disappearance. Toby moves to leave, but Grayson blocks him, accusing Eve of triggering events that endangered Avery. Pressed, Toby demands their intel, and Lyra outlines the triad: Watcher (Lily), Hand (Omega), and Judge (Monoceros), always three women.

Toby discloses that Alice Hawthorne, presumed dead, visited him three times: first to save his life and send him on a global misdirection; second on the night Avery was born; and third shortly after Avery’s inheritance was revealed. He shows a postcard of a white-cloaked figure that lured him back to Hannah; Alice arrived in red then, later in white, signaling changing roles.

Lyra connects Alice’s colors to roles: red for Watcher the night Avery was born, black for Hand the night Lyra’s father died, and later white for Judge. Toby confirms the timeline and adds that Alice warned him to stay away and said, “everything happens for a reason,” prompting the question of whose reason shaped Avery’s inheritance.

Toby reveals Hannah once declined Alice’s offer to “disappear,” refusing to leave her child. Lyra links that language to Calla Thorp and wonders if Avery’s vanishing is the same kind of removal. The implication is that the triad recruits or erases people as part of its agenda.

As they plan next moves, Lyra explains her father’s suicide and cryptic clues (calla lily, omega, Hawthorne), believing Eve holds a file that could identify him and the triad’s entry point. Toby, currently shut out by Eve, asserts she might still deal with Grayson. He resolves to find Avery by any means, while Grayson prepares to extract the file from Eve.
