CHAPTER 30: JAMESON

Toby produces a stack of postcards—his to Hannah written in invisible ink and Hannah’s to him—reminding Jameson of Avery’s past gift to Toby. He explains that after hearing Avery was missing, he searched a Washington State container yard tied to his past but found no records. To steady himself, he turned to translating an Eastern European folklore tome once handed to him in Seoul, which had contained a program from Hannah’s funeral.

Reading Hannah’s postcards about Avery’s milestones grounds Toby, but a different clue emerges: among Hannah’s belongings lies a London postcard seemingly written by Toby in invisible ink. Toby insists he did not write it and that Hannah convincingly mimicked his mixed print–cursive style, planting a story that never happened to flag a code.

Toby describes how the false beach recovery scene signals fabrication, yet captures their truth, reinforcing that Hannah crafted it deliberately. He underscores his certainty in Hannah’s love for Avery—proof her death was real—and frames the card as a contingency message meant only to surface if events went awry.

Analyzing the handwriting, Toby notes he is consistent about which letters he writes in print versus cursive. Hannah’s imitation includes a four-percent error rate; those intentional deviations mark specific letters. Tracing them yields C-R-U-C-I-B-L-E: “crucible.”

The postcard’s image—Buckingham Palace—anchors the location as London. Toby connects this to an old offer Hannah once received from his mother and concludes Hannah sent him here to find the crucible. Acknowledging their exhaustion, Toby tells Jameson they must sleep, then begin the search to uncover what Hannah intended them to find.
