CHAPTER 60: GIGI

Overview

Gigi arrives at Hawthorne House with Slate, Knox, and Toby, integrates with the Hawthornes, and synthesizes their scattered intel on the Crucible. She expands the timeline to 1951, explains Helena’s role, Calla’s uncertain fate, Vega’s dangerous line, and male-risk immunities. Nora infiltrates security, confirming proximity risks and a past connection to Grayson.

Summary

Gigi arrives at Hawthorne House with Slate, a shattered Knox, and Toby, feeling changed by recent revelations and danger. Alisa receives them; Knox delivers Gigi per his deal and tries to leave, but Gigi refuses to let him spiral. Grayson embraces Gigi, relieved yet protective, and the group heads to the investigation hub.

Xander introduces four sprawling whiteboards. Gigi surveys notes tying together Prague, Orpheus, the Mercy, Monoceros, timelines back to 1967, and names including Calla, Lyra, Edgar, Luiz, Alice, Avery, Eve, and Hannah. She insists on a full briefing and, after hearing everything, takes a marker to extend the timeline back to 1951, labeling that Crucible’s Candidates: Helena, Vega, and Andy.

Gigi parses roles on the boards—Watcher/Lily/Red (Calla with Eve as Candidate), Hand/Omega/Black (unidentified Candidate), and Judge/Monoceros/White (Alice, with Avery possibly taken by the Omega). She reveals her source Nora and recounts Helena Thorp’s explanations: at Crucible’s end, one Candidate ascends as Watcher; survivors are placed near power by the Gilded Blade. Survival is not guaranteed.

Gigi shares Helena’s insistence that Calla is “gone,” admits she only saw the Woman in Red’s eyes, and outlines the Thorp fleur-de-lis as Lily–Omega–Monoceros. She explains Helena adopted the symbol from Vega, whose ancient family line is lethal; Calla was sent to Vega’s family for training six years ago. Nora warned that men who know too much often die, though immunities can be bargained when a Candidate agrees—offering hope for the Hawthorne-adjacent men.

Nora then appears, having slipped past Oren’s security by tacit allowance. Zara bristles, but Nora coolly frames her entry as a test Oren permitted. Grayson confronts her, and Nora reveals she and Grayson met at Harvard over two years prior, adding a new, personal link to the unfolding conspiracy.
