CHAPTER 13: ROHAN
Overview
Rohan tails Brady through the bayou, then stops him and lays out three ruthless options: use Brady to flush his sponsor in England, take him by force, or bait Calla with Gigi. Rohan’s real aim is capturing Calla to secure Jameson’s payout and the Mercy. He ends by inviting the hidden Watcher to bargain.
Summary
Rohan shadows Brady through the bayou as Brady obsessively searches for Calla Thorp after Gigi appears with a calla lily. When Brady starts circling the same ground, Rohan sweeps him off his feet and confronts him, noting Brady’s tattoo as proof the duchess interfered with the Grandest Game.
Seeing leverage in both Brady and the Watcher, Rohan outlines his motives: capture Calla, earn Jameson Hawthorne’s promised payout, and buy the Mercy. He presses Brady on what he would do if he found Calla, exposing Brady’s unresolved feelings as exploitable weakness.
Rohan presents three options: Brady goes to England willingly so Rohan can flush out Brady’s sponsor; Brady goes unwillingly and unconscious; or Rohan uses Gigi as bait again, since two calla lilies suggest the Watcher’s fixation on her. Brady offers only contempt and heads back toward the shanty where the others wait.
Alone in the night, Rohan listens for a hidden observer and considers the possibility that the Watcher lurks nearby. To seed another path to victory, he calls into the darkness with a single proposition: “Make me an offer.”
