CHAPTER 59: ROHAN
Overview
Savannah confronts Rohan with icy finality, returning only to transfer her trust fund and deliver symbolic items. Her money all but guarantees Rohan’s ascent as Proprietor of the Devil’s Mercy, but she severs all personal ties and reclaims the kitten. Rohan wins the power he sought at the cost of Savannah.
Summary
Rohan sits on the plane with a kitten he cannot bring himself to abandon, wrestling with his usual ability to emotionally detach. Seventeen hours have passed since he zipped Savannah into her smoky-gray gown and unleashed her on the Devil’s Mercy; ten since Zella told Savannah what becoming the Proprietor entails. Brady, upset, has already stalked off, and Rohan let him go.
Savannah returns through the cockpit, cold and controlled. She warns Rohan never to touch or speak to her again, then throws a bag on the table. Inside, Rohan finds Savannah’s shredded ballgown, a hairbrush, a knife, a glass rose, and an account statement showing a massive transfer—millions more than he needs.
Savannah explains she compelled her trustee mother and lawyers to move her trust, stating the transfer may take days to clear. The money ensures Rohan’s victory in the Grandest Game and his ascension to the Mercy’s throne, but Savannah makes clear it costs him her. She takes the kitten without touching Rohan, telling him she hopes the throne is everything he dreamed—and that he knows better than to dream of her.
