Summary
Late at night in Hawthorne House, Lyra, Grayson, Nash, Libby, and Max struggle with an overload of numerical possibilities from Tobias Hawthorne’s patent clue. Zara Hawthorne arrives, observes, and insists they are overcomplicating the problem. She proposes starting fresh using only the patent number.
Accepting Zara’s minimalist approach, the group constrains the digits to 1–26 and lists all valid partitions, generating six possible numeric sequences. Using the simplest A1Z26 cipher, Nash converts these sequences into letters, producing six letter strings to inspect.
