CHAPTER 90: JAMESON
Overview
Emily, impersonating Eve, frees Grayson and tries to manipulate him, but Grayson forces a hidden exit by kissing her. Alice intervenes, cures Jameson, and reveals a long-orchestrated plan built on calculated nudges and Avery’s central role. With explosives looming, Alice orders Jameson and Grayson to leave via a tunnel and not look back.
Summary
Drugged and nearly paralyzed, Jameson watches Emily—posing as Eve—free Grayson and pretend to help. Grayson demands information about the Crucible, prompting Emily to describe the trials, poisons, and candidate dynamics, revealing her ambitions and the manipulation that forced Alice to call the Crucible.
Grayson tests Emily’s leverage: if he kisses her, she will open a hidden door. He kisses her, and before she can renege, a wall opens as Alice arrives, orders Emily away to the final trial, and injects Jameson with an antidote. Grayson confronts Alice; she admits steering events with strategic nudges.
Alice outlines her history and intentions: she once chose Tobias Hawthorne over ascension, sees the brothers as refined strengths of Tobias, and has engineered a broader endgame. She frames legacy beyond people, hinting that their outcomes are part of her design.
Pressed about Avery, Eve, and Nora, Alice signals imminent detonation—“a phoenix needs to burn”—and insists Avery is exactly where she must be. She opens a tunnel out and gives Jameson an Orpheus-and-Eurydice choice: trust Avery’s capability or doom her by staying.
Grayson backs Alice’s directive that family trust goes both ways. Alice commands the brothers to leave immediately and not look back, as the final trial commences and Avery’s path depends on their absence.
