CHAPTER 25: GIGI
Overview
Gigi witnesses Brady press Nora about the Thorp fleur-de-lis, connecting it to omega and Saint Adelaide. Nora warns that ignorance can be lethal for men, reveals Avery was not the intended target—Brady was “promised”—then escapes. Gigi insists on investigating the Saint Adelaide statue marked with the Thorp symbol.
Summary
Outside the shack, Gigi and Knox monitor Brady with their captive, Nora. Inside, Gigi spots a calla lily on the floor as Brady, having untied Nora, draws the Thorp-stylized fleur-de-lis in dust and lays out its history: a unique local variant marking Thorp-built sites and a darker fleur-de-lis legacy in Louisiana. He ties the parish’s renaming to Saint Adelaide’s story and notes the symbol means far more to Nora.
Brady highlights added symmetries in the Thorp version and suggests the leaves, turned, resemble the Greek omega. Nora cuts him off, warning that the wrong kind of ignorance could be a death sentence for a man. When Gigi asks about a missing friend, Nora says it was not supposed to be her. Speaking in another language, Nora adds it was supposed to be Brady—“promised” to him, per Brady’s translation.
Without warning, Nora explodes into action, flooring Brady and Knox and vanishing. Brady, bloodied, sprints after her; Knox follows. Rohan and Savannah arrive and immediately join the chase, leaving Gigi behind.
Refusing to “run away,” Gigi insists she can play smart. Synthesizing Nora’s reactions and Brady’s deductions, she concludes the symbol and Saint Adelaide are key. Gigi demands Knox take her to the Saint Adelaide statue in front of the museum, which Brady identified as marked by the Thorp fleur-de-lis.
