CHAPTER 82: JAMESON

Overview

Jameson and Toby navigate a subterranean labyrinth, then split up. Jameson reaches the center, is tranquilized, and awakens chained with Grayson and Slate, facing a woman posing as Eve. Slate exposes the deception, prompting Jameson to realize the Watcher isn’t Hannah. The true Watcher appears and greets Jameson.

Summary

Jameson and Toby press through a labyrinth, debating monsters and motives. Jameson argues Alice and Hannah aren’t monsters; Toby insists he knows Hannah and that her actions protect Avery and Eve. At a fork, Toby suggests splitting to improve their odds, and Jameson takes the right-hand path.

Reaching the apparent center, Jameson finds a long sword. As he lifts it, a dart silently strikes his neck, dropping him. A woman with Lyra’s eyes examines him as darkness and paralysis close in, and Jameson drifts into memories of Prague, Avery, and the infinity ring—reminding himself of his promise and love before pain and blood intrude.

Jameson awakens shackled overhead in a freezing chamber. Across from him hang Slate and an unconscious Grayson; beside him hangs a woman who appears to be Eve, shaken and dressed in a dirty white shift. She describes “remediation”: surviving trials and a poisoned choice. Jameson strains against his chains, bleeding, as she begs him to free her.

Slate breaks in, declaring the woman is not Eve. The realization snaps into place for Jameson as shackles elsewhere click open: the last Crucible was four to six years ago, and the old man’s farewell to Alice admitted inference about the Watcher. Hannah is not the Watcher.

The true Watcher steps forward and touches Jameson’s face, greeting him as “Jamie,” confirming the impersonation and upending their assumptions as Jameson remains chained beside Grayson and across from Slate.
