CHAPTER 104: JAMESON
Overview
At Toby’s seaside ash-scattering, Nora returns with a cryptic talisman—N.A.V., “Nature abhors a vacuum”—and proposes reforming the Kyrie, with Eve as a shadow operative and Avery as a visible force, continuing Alice’s web. Jameson recognizes the plan isn’t his to lead, then proposes to Avery; she accepts with the infinity ring.
Summary
At a lighthouse overlooking an isolated cliff, Jameson watches Avery and Eve scatter Toby’s ashes while standing back with Jackson Currie. Jameson reflects on Toby’s bequeathed leather book of fairy tales, whose spider-and-web illustration hints at Alice’s long game.
Nora arrives injured and is intercepted by Jameson. She reveals a rose-gold necklace engraved N.A.V.—Natura abhorret vacuum—attributed to Aristotle, and explains that with the Kyrie head and heir dead, a vacuum must be filled. She intends to reshape the Kyrie, leveraging her upbringing and presenting a Woman in Red.
Jameson envisions Alice’s design: Avery, Eve, Nora—and Zella—reforming the web into a force for good without killings or a Crucible, with Eve working in the shadows and Nora providing protection. Recognizing this isn’t his story, Jameson hands Avery Toby’s book and withdraws to the cliff.
As sunset nears, Jameson resolves that he is done waiting to be “worthy.” He proposes without a new ring. Avery declines a new ring, slides the infinity ring to her left hand, pulls him to his feet, and seals the moment with “No regrets.”
