CHAPTER 21: LYRA
Overview
Lyra wakes at Mile’s End, reconnects with Cooper, and finds Grayson pushing himself to face Avery’s disappearance without shutting down. Alisa can’t locate Odette yet and is illicitly pulling Lyra’s kidnapping file. Grayson asks Lyra to revisit 947 Onomo Crescent to trigger memories; Lyra resolutely agrees.
Summary
Lyra dreams of a calla lily disintegrating, then wakes at her childhood home with her little brother, Cooper, excitedly announcing Grayson’s presence and “magic tricks.” Learning Grayson went running, Lyra quickly dresses, mindful of Avery’s disappearance and Grayson’s likely sleepless night.
Tracking Grayson to a creekside clearing, Lyra finds him in borrowed flannel and jeans, determined to feel his fear and grief instead of shutting down. Grayson admits Avery often takes risks for those she loves and could be in danger, and Lyra offers quiet comfort.
Grayson reports that Alisa still can’t find Odette and is having someone illicitly obtain Lyra’s kidnapping file. Recognizing what must come next, Lyra names the address—947 Onomo Crescent—where she was taken and a man claiming to be her father died.
Grayson asks Lyra to return to the scene to trigger her embodied memory; Lyra, who encodes memory through place and sensation, agrees immediately, insisting she won’t be held back from what needs to be done.
