CHAPTER 56: GIGI

Gigi meets Helena Thorp for a symbolic game of War. Through suits and stories, Helena discloses that she was a Crucible Candidate in 1951 alongside Vega and Andy. She explains the Gilded Blade’s structure—the ascendant cycle from Watcher to Hand to Judge—and frames the non-ascendants as the “web” to the ascendant “spider.”

Helena ties the Thorp family’s role to the Blade’s long history, revealing she married into the line to continue its legacy and sent Calla to Europe for brutal training tied to Vega’s dangerous family. She emphasizes that surviving the Crucible forges binding sisterhoods and implies Zella was once a Candidate with Calla.

Pressed about Calla, Helena suggests Calla is dead, noting she would only surrender the fleur-de-lis necklace in death. Knox overhears and explodes; Helena then reveals Knox’s parentage—he is Orion Thorp’s son—and recounts separating Knox and Calla by exposing their forbidden connection and arranging Calla’s disappearance for training.

Helena details the life cycle of an ascendant (Watcher→Hand→Judge) and says Vega has long since died, having made her final call. She admits deep love for Vega, forged by the trials, and implies not all three Candidates survive each Crucible.

Finally, Helena offers Vega’s fleur-de-lis to Gigi, effectively naming her as heir to the Thorp line within the Blade’s web. Gigi refuses, choosing Knox over power. Helena drops the necklace and warns that after this Crucible concludes, a new—and possibly more brutal—Judge may leave Gigi unprotected.
