CHAPTER 102: LYRA
Overview
Lyra sells her black opal ring with Grayson and Nan’s help, negotiating a higher price and accepting a vivid apatite necklace. She returns to Mile’s End to reconcile with her parents, gifts them a check, and affirms that family is chosen. A playful water-balloon skirmish lets Grayson bond with her family.
Summary
At a private jeweler, Lyra prepares to sell her black opal ring while Grayson observes, urging her to follow through. The jeweler offers a high price, and Lyra counters. When the jeweler proposes a trade, Grayson requests something small, durable, and vivid; the jeweler produces a raw neon apatite necklace.
Grayson deems it perfect and pushes the offer higher. Nan escalates the demand to an eighty-percent increase and cheekily adds dinner to the terms, sealing the deal. Lyra leaves with the sale finalized and the necklace.
They drive to Mile’s End. Grayson waits by the car while Lyra faces her parents alone. In the kitchen, Lyra declares she knows who she is and who her parents are, asserting her identity through the traits she shares with them. She slides them a substantial check, insisting despite her father’s pride.
Lyra reflects on seeing Katalin’s body and feeling no attachment, concluding that family is a choice and she’s already chosen hers. Her mother asks if the story ends happily; Lyra admits she’s both okay and not, and that her story isn’t over.
Outside, Cooper ambushes Grayson with water balloons. Grayson plays along, then neatly catches a final toss, trading playful threats with Lyra. The scene cements Lyra’s reconnection with her family and hints at Grayson’s integration into their everyday life.
