Chapter 19

Overview

A Nikara assault on the wharf fails catastrophically when the Federation deploys poison gas, killing soldiers, spreading panic through Khurdalain, and leading to Nezha's capture. Altan saves a masked Federation prisoner instead of Nezha, exposing his ruthless strategic priorities and deepening Rin's distrust of him.

Rin's confrontation with Altan escalates into a dangerous contest of divine fire, revealing both Rin's ability to summon the Phoenix under emotional pressure and Altan's far greater, hate-driven control. The chapter turns the siege more desperate while transforming Altan from admired commander into a frightening, manipulative force in Rin's life.

Summary

Rin and Nezha fight together during a joint Seventh Division and Cike assault meant to seize the old Hesperian quarters by the wharf. The plan is to divide the Federation forces and cut off dock access, but the Nikara troops must cross heavily defended intersections while Federation soldiers fire safely from rooftops and embassy windows.

As Ramsa's bombs and Altan's fire help the Nikara push forward, Nezha questions Rin about Chaghan and hints that powerful figures fear him. Rin refuses to spy on the Cike for Nezha or his father. The attack then collapses when a green-yellow gas rolls over the barricades, choking and killing soldiers while masked Federation troops advance behind it.

Rin tries to rescue Nezha after the gas overtakes him, but Altan drags Rin back and orders a retreat. Altan knocks the wind out of Rin when she refuses to abandon Nezha, and Rin is carried away while masked Federation soldiers appear to take Nezha. The gas attack spreads terror through Khurdalain, causing civilians to flee and commanders to call an emergency meeting.

At headquarters, Jun reports the devastation, and Altan orders headquarters moved to the Sihang warehouse. Rin learns that Altan entered the gas with a mask to save a captured Federation soldier instead of Nezha, because Altan values the prisoner for strategic reasons. Rin openly challenges Altan in front of the commanders, accusing Altan of abandoning her friend.

After dismissing the others, Altan reprimands Rin for contradicting him and reminds Rin that Altan is Rin's commander, not Rin's friend or brother. When Rin continues to accuse Altan, Altan strikes Rin and uses his fire to intimidate her. Rin answers by opening herself to the Phoenix, matching Altan's flames briefly, but Altan's deeper, hate-fueled fire overwhelms Rin's flare of rage.

Instead of punishing Rin further, Altan seems pleased that Rin can summon the Phoenix under pressure. Rin leaves exhausted and furious, realizing Altan has discovered what provokes her power and that their relationship has shifted from mentorship toward coercion.
