Chapter 18
Overview
Khurdalain’s defense deteriorates as the Nikara lose ground, supplies, and cohesion, making clear that the city is likely doomed despite the time it has bought for Golyn Niis. Chaghan Suren, Altan’s lieutenant and Qara’s spiritually linked twin, returns wounded from a dangerous mission with vital information, forcing the Cike to defy Jun’s gate orders to save him.
Chaghan’s arrival reframes Altan’s behavior: his brutality and distance are not only cruelty but symptoms of fear, inexperience, and dependence on victory. Rin’s resentment toward Altan is challenged when Chaghan bluntly orders her to master the Phoenix and stop adding to Altan’s burdens.
Summary
Rin reports reconnaissance findings to Altan as the siege of Khurdalain worsens. The Nikara have lost suburbs, supplies, riverbank strongholds, and many soldiers; even with the Seventh Division, the city is close to falling. Rin also relays that the Fifth Division wants to move up a beach offensive, though the request comes through political channels because Jun refuses to legitimize Altan directly.
A scream interrupts the meeting. Rin and Altan find Qara convulsing in the sentry tower without visible wounds. Altan realizes Qara is reacting to the return and injury of her brother, Chaghan, and Qara manages to say that Chaghan is at the east gate.
At the gate, Altan fights through Federation soldiers on horseback while protecting a wounded young man. The Fifth Division soldiers refuse to open the gates because of Jun’s orders, but Baji forces the mechanism open while Suni holds off the guards. Qara fires arrows into the Federation ranks, allowing Altan and Chaghan to get inside before reinforcements arrive.
Altan, Qara, and Chaghan argue over Chaghan’s reckless return, but Altan quickly questions him about whether he saw an unnamed person and whether he brought schematics. Chaghan confirms both before nearly collapsing from his wounds. Rin is sent to fetch Enki, then dismissed while the three remain in Altan’s office for the rest of the afternoon.
At dinner, Baji and Unegen explain that Chaghan is Altan’s lieutenant and Qara’s anchor twin, spiritually linked so that injury to one affects the other. Chaghan joins Rin and immediately probes her inability to summon the Phoenix since Sinegard, offering to help as Altan’s Seer. Rin rejects the implication that she has failed and vents her anger at Altan’s harshness.
After ordering Baji and Unegen away, Chaghan warns Rin never to insult Altan again, then explains that Altan is frightened and overwhelmed by command. Chaghan argues that Khurdalain was never winnable, only a sacrifice to buy time, and that defeat may break Altan because Altan has built his identity around victory. Chaghan ends by ordering Rin to stop failing, learn to call fire, and give Altan one less burden.
