Overview

A new daughter challenges and kills the Sovran, triggering an empire-wide consonance. Surur-Tlassen, freed from the Sovran’s pull, relinquishes office and joins the remnants. Dafyd learns of the succession, notes the Carryx remain operational, and recalls their empire survived losing their original homeworld. He turns to Clae, probing how their system endures such shocks.

Summary

In the Sovran’s meeting chamber, Surur-Tlassen and assembled Carryx witness the emergence of a new daughter. The Sovran and daughter exchange ancient battle calls and clash. Despite an early advantage for the Sovran, the daughter cripples her, smashes her crest, and kills her, claiming rule as the arena falls silent.

As the new Sovran begins her song, Surur-Tlassen experiences a profound release from the old resonance. No longer compelled by the ruler’s pheromonal and sonic command, Surur crosses the chamber to sit among the remnants. Urur-Atlak welcomes Surur “home,” and Surur accepts a final life in the private creche, while the empire’s machinery continues without pause.

Elsewhere, Dafyd reports to Ekur-Tkalal on improved grass-nutrient work and moiety staffing plans. A vast choral signal interrupts: the Sovran is dead and a heir ascends. Ekur confirms the news and notes it does not concern “animals,” then resumes routine administrative matters, underscoring Carryx continuity beyond leadership death.

Disquieted, Dafyd wanders the palace, noticing the multitude of species and recalling that the world-palace was designed by Astrdeim Phylarchs, not the Carryx. The memory snaps into focus: the Carryx migrated here after losing their original homeworld. He races back to question Clae.

Meeting Clae, Dafyd shares the Sovran’s death. Clae confirms the Carryx came to this world roughly seven millennia ago after their first planet’s destruction. Dafyd fixates on the crucial question: why did losing their center and Sovran not break the empire, and what sustaining mechanism allows the Carryx to endure systemic shocks?
