Chapter 20
Overview
News reveals Castle Javis’s revolt was crushed under Mallow’s tightened portal controls, and Orion killed Finola. Reeling, Briony channels grief into research on brands and explores Hearst Hall. She deduces Toven wants her to learn mind barriers, discovers his secret bedroom, and finds a shoebox containing her ribbon—evidence of personal ties and hidden motives.
Summary
A propagandist Journal entry announces Mallow’s victory at Castle Javis after instituting an International Portal Prohibition. Orion Hearst intercepted rebel boats and killed Finola Rosewood. Briony reels, struggles to breathe, and uses meditation to contain her grief while questioning who else died and whether Toven was among the “limited casualties.”
Resolute, Briony goes to the library and summons every book on magical brands, committing to action rather than waiting under Mallow’s gaze. Over several days, the hall responds sluggishly, as if in mourning. Briony checks the Journal daily, researches, and paces the grounds, repeatedly testing the boundary tattoo until numbness quiets her panic. She looks for Vesper, assuming the fox is with injured Toven.
Passing the meditation chamber, Briony reconsiders prior events: the mind-barrier book that seemed to appear for her and Toven’s decision to show her an illegal-use room. She concludes Toven wants her to learn mind barriers, suggesting he is not using her as a heartspring and hinting at deeper Hearst secrets or dissent from Bomardi norms.
Searching for Toven’s quarters, Briony discovers a charmed door marked by a fox carving and enters his bedroom. The room’s proximity to hers and its orderliness underscore deliberate placement and restraint. Briony senses his presence and wonders if he will return, then methodically inspects shelves, bathroom, and closet for clues about his loyalties.
Among neatly kept garments she finds a black shoebox containing a single green lace ribbon she recognizes as her own. The discovery confirms an intimate, concealed connection: Toven kept something of Briony’s. She returns to her room, reorganizing her deductions—Hearst Hall hides secrets, Toven likely wants her mind shielded, and his possession of her ribbon complicates his motives.
