Six years earlier at Biltmore Palace, Briony spends the solstice sunbathing with Katrina, who struggles with the heat and palace customs. A noon cannon startles Katrina, underscoring Briony’s comfort with Biltmore’s traditions. Katrina idly mentions a rumor that Toven Hearst and Larissa Gains will be formally betrothed after the break.

The rumor stings Briony, who has grown sensitive to Toven during their elixirs partnership. Realizing his teasing attentions may have been meaningless if he planned to wed Larissa, Briony feels sudden anger and betrayal.

A portal sizzles open, and General Meers and Finola arrive urgently. Briony follows them to King Jacquel’s study, where Rory insists they stay. General Meers announces that Seat Gin Pulvey is dead and that Veronika Mallow now holds Bomard’s Seat through a swift, legal succession maneuver.

Finola explains: Riann Cohle killed his father and ascended to first in line, then named Mallow his successor and abdicated. Before killing Pulvey, Mallow named Cohle her successor, securing both positions without disrupting the line. The court speculates Mallow preempted dissent among successors.

Finola adds a troubling rumor: Mallow may order an end to mind magic in Bomard. Briony questions how Bomardi classmates will continue Eversun studies if their discipline is banned. The scene ends with Rory dryly noting his interest in how Bomardi students will return to school after solstice, highlighting the looming upheaval.
