Overview

Storm of Secrets and Sorrow follows Tessalyn Ausra after her selection as Theon St. Orcas’s Source exposes a power no one in Devram can easily define. Suppressed by bands, watched by rulers, and pulled by a volatile bond, Tessa must navigate a world where Fae, Legacy bloodlines, priestesses, and old accords all treat her as a problem to be solved or a weapon to be claimed.

At the center are Tessa, Theon, his dragon-linked Guardian Luka Mors, and Theon’s brother Axel, whose loyalties are tested as secrets about Source Marks, hidden lineages, and the Everlasting War begin to surface. Around them, Katya, Dex, Lord Jove, Auryon, Tristyn Blackheart, and other allies or manipulators complicate every choice.

The novel blends court politics, magical training, prophecy, trauma, and dangerous romance. Its central conflict asks whether destiny, control, and inherited power can be resisted when every faction believes Tessa’s existence may decide the balance of the realm.

Plot Summary ⚠️ Spoilers

The story opens with a memory from Tessa’s time at Celeste Estate, where she survives hunger, punishment, and brutal assessments with help from Dex, Lange, Oralia, and later Corbin. A prior assessment vision of tunnels, violence, and a violet-eyed woman hints that Tessa has long been watched by forces beyond estate control. In the present, Tessa wakes in Theon St. Orcas’s rooms after being revealed as non-Fae and dangerously powerful. Her suppressing bands cause constant pain, while her bond with Theon offers relief and confusion.

A Tribunal hearing debates whether Tessa can remain Theon’s Source when she is not Fae and carries Achaz-aligned magic. Lord Rordan Jove, Lady Kyra Aithne, Lady Luna Candra, and the other rulers argue over law, danger, and precedent. Tessa chooses to remain with Theon for stability, but Jove limits the arrangement until winter solstice, orders testing and training in Faven, and condemns Theon for keeping her power banded. Valter St. Orcas, Theon’s father, responds by imposing his own plans: keep Tessa’s nature hidden, sever the bond if possible, Match her to Luka for political gain, and prepare Katya as Theon’s replacement Source. He enforces obedience by stabbing Theon and tightening control.

As Tessa’s suppressed power worsens, Theon and Luka secretly take her to the Wynfell River and remove her bands. Her storm magic erupts, but Theon’s darkness and Luka’s dragon fire help contain it, revealing a powerful compatibility among them. The first Augury attack follows: masked zealots claim Theon and Tessa’s pairing threatens Devram. Luka’s dragon form destroys them, but the attack confirms a wider conspiracy. Meanwhile Axel begins protecting Katya, a fire Fae conditioned by Falein rules to obey and serve. Their relationship grows through care, research, shared danger, and eventually consensual intimacy, even as Valter tries to use Katya as an asset.

The group seeks answers in the Underground from the Witch Cienna, who reveals that the Everlasting War continues, Fate has been altered, priestesses may have hidden Tessa’s nature with glamours, and others like Tessa exist. On the return, Jagger’s splinter Night Children clan ambushes them after masked envoys urge Tessa’s death. Jagger stabs Tessa with a Legacy-killing dagger and bites her, leaving the bond silent. Gia heals her, while Theon and Axel confront Night Children leaders and Theon kills Henry to reassert control. Cienna then tells Theon that Tessa was not born in Devram, is not a Legacy, and has a god for a father.

Tessa’s visions intensify: underground prisons, chained figures, prophetic warnings, and scenes of Theon killing her for balance. Scarlett Sutara Aditya and Sorin Aditya, powerful visitors from another realm, arrive after aiding against another Augury assault. Scarlett reveals Tessa’s father is Temural, god of the wild and untamed, and that Tessa is connected to Arius and Serafina bloodlines. She also exposes that mirrors can serve as world gateways and that Devram’s Mark system may be a distorted version of a single Source Mark used elsewhere. Axel and Katya later discover evidence suggesting the true Source bond may not form until the final Mark.

Tessa is sent to Faven, where Lord Jove gives her a book of Marks, trains her through harsh necessity, and has Head Priestess Elowyn present an elixir meant to unlock truths. Jove grants a Blood Vow that Tessa’s choices will be her own, and she drinks. In Theon’s absence, he investigates Celeste Estate and learns Mother Cordelia abused and manipulated Tessa, possibly tampering with records. He also bargains with Tristyn Blackheart for information, while Valter increases pressure by bringing Felicity Davers, Theon’s pregnant Match, into Theon’s rooms. Tessa returns early, finds Felicity, and breaks into a storm of grief until Luka restrains and comforts her.

Theon denies intimacy with Felicity but cannot undo the damage. Tessa grows emotionally numb and focuses on training. Auryon replaces Cordelia as her tutor and teaches broader history about Siadrin, the gods, and Devram’s purpose. Tessa begins asserting power openly, including at a dinner where Valter tests her and she shocks Felicity with controlled light. Research on Ekayan Island suggests hidden Legacy-Fae offspring may have been concealed among Fae and later identified by Cordelia; to protect friends, Theon claims Lange and Corbin together.

Cordelia then reveals she was promised advancement for keeping Tessa alive and controlled, and she summons the Augury. Auryon and the wolves Roan and Niylah help Tessa survive until Luka Travels her away and removes her bands. Tessa’s magic explodes into light, wind, lightning, and gold, and Luka admits he may be bound to her through the second Mark. The third Mark is performed without bands, requiring Theon and Luka to combine powers again. Tessa experiences another vision of Theon attempting sacrifice before Auryon intervenes and removes Tessa’s ring, implying another path.

The rulers abruptly summon Tessa to a hearing and decide she will be kept at the Pantheon for safety. Tessa, exhausted and resigned, accepts, and Dysani removes her while Theon is restrained. Luka secretly Travels to her room and learns her visions are shifting. At the same time, Axel hides Katya with Tristyn after killing Valter’s escorts, then is captured and tortured by Valter, Julius, and Mansel for Katya’s location. He refuses to betray her and is taken toward the Underground in chains.

In the Pantheon, Tessa allows masked Augury members to take her, expecting confrontation. They bring her to Valter, who reveals he and Rordan once built the Augury, that Rordan concealed Tessa, and that Theon discovered more of her lineage than he admitted. As Valter orders her execution, golden fissures open and pale Hunters emerge, swearing service to Tessa. She directs them against the Augury, kills the Legacy who banded her, spares Valter and Eviana for later, and learns from Tristyn that the Hunters exist to kill Arius descendants, confirming her own Arius blood. Tessa rejects Tristyn’s attempt to take her to Lilura and vows to end Valter’s bloodline.

Tessa then portals to Arius House and confronts Theon for hiding the truth. She weaponizes the Marks, drains his darkness, forces the final Source Mark, and binds his power to hers. She erases her own Bargain mark, leaves Theon marked and obligated until he rules Arius, rejects his confession of love, and departs with Valter taken prisoner. Theon, shattered, concludes Tessa descends from both Arius and Serafina and from Achaz and Zinta, embodying opposed powers tied to the Revelation Decree. He assumes rule in Valter’s absence, plans to find Axel and retrieve Katya, and sends Luka to reach Tessa.

In Faven’s underground cells, Tessa confronts imprisoned Valter, who warns that Achaz offers only another form of control and hints Rordan brought her to Devram. Deeper within, she finds a sapphire-eyed prisoner in a radiant collar who calls her daughter of wild and fury and warns that all sides will use her. The novel closes in the Underground, where Tristyn, Cienna, Auryon, Gia, Razik Greybane, and Eliza answer Scarlett’s desperate contingency. When Tristyn reveals Tessa is both Temural’s daughter and tied to Achaz’s line, Razik warns that such a being was never meant to exist and that if the imbalance remains, all realms could fall into Chaos.

Themes

Storm of Secrets and Sorrow is driven by the question of what happens when a person treated as a weapon begins to claim herself. Across Tessa’s journey—from the Celeste Estate’s cellar punishments to the Pantheon hearings, Faven training, and her final confrontation with Valter—the novel returns to the tension between control and agency. The restraining bands, Source Marks, Match contracts, and Tribunal decrees all symbolize systems that turn bodies into property. Tessa’s refusal to be banded after Cordelia’s betrayal, and later her reversal of the Source bond onto Theon, mark a dark but powerful reclamation of choice.

Another major theme is truth as both liberation and danger. Nearly every faction withholds knowledge: Theon hides Tessa’s divine lineage, Valter conceals political schemes, Rordan offers autonomy while keeping prisoners, and even allies like Tristyn and Scarlett reveal only fragments. The chapter visits to Cienna, Ekayan’s archives, and Auryon’s lessons show that history itself has been curated. The truth of Devram—its gods, Marks, Fae origins, and Everlasting War—does not simply explain the world; it destabilizes it.

The book also explores love entangled with power. Tessa and Theon’s bond offers comfort, desire, and recognition, yet it is poisoned by hierarchy and secrecy. Luka’s growing connection to Tessa suggests a gentler alternative based on presence and emotional honesty, while Axel and Katya’s relationship foregrounds consent and healing after coercion. These relationships ask whether intimacy can survive in a society built on ownership.

Balance is the novel’s central mythic motif. Light and darkness, Achaz and Arius, Fae and Legacy, creation and destruction recur in Marks, visions, and prophecies. But the story increasingly challenges “balance” as an excuse for sacrifice. The Augury’s insistence that Tessa must die contrasts with Tessa’s belief that the true imbalance lies in Legacy domination. By the end, her wrath exposes a final theme: suppressed sorrow can become revolution—but without trust, it may also become catastrophe.
