19. Theon

On the Pantheon balcony, Tessa warns they must leave as her power surges. Tristyn Blackheart pressures Theon and Luka to remove her bands and expel magic, but Theon refuses his interference. With Tessa slipping under her magic’s thrall, Theon carries her off the balcony; Luka follows, and they decide on the nearby training arenas.

Tessa yields to her power, finding “safety” there. Theon and Luka lure her through back streets, avoiding witnesses who might draw her predatory focus. In the largest arena, two wolves guard Tessa as she removes her bands, releasing a blinding eruption. Instead of colliding with Theon’s darkness or Luka’s black flames, her light meets white fire and shadow from two suddenly appearing warriors—an elegant, silver-haired woman with shadow panthers and a masked man wreathed in multicolored flame.

When Augury members emerge from the shadows and upper decks, battle explodes. The silver-haired woman slashes through foes with white flames, shadows, and blades, while her companion holds the line. Luka takes the high ground; Theon engages assailants on the floor. Tessa, blood-spattered and entranced by her magic, kills an Augury captive with lightning, confirming her power’s lethal tilt.

Amid the melee, Theon realizes the strangers are aiding, not harming, and moves to Tessa. She challenges his control, but Theon binds her light with his shadows, allowing her power to bite and then constricting it until balance returns. Through shared vows of balance—light and dark, beginnings and endings—Tessa’s fury quiets. She steadies against Theon; Luka lands beside them as the fight ebbs and the wolves relax.

With calm returning, Tessa again asks who the strangers are. Theon finally recognizes the silver-haired woman as the figure from the mirror and orders Luka to call Axel, signaling a new, dangerous connection that reframes the night’s ambush and their fragile control over Tessa’s burgeoning power.
