20. Tessa
Overview
Scarlett Sutara Aditya and Sorin Aditya breach the Arius wards and confront Theon’s household. They reveal they are from another realm and that Tessa is the daughter of the god Temural and related to Arius, upending Devram’s lore. Scarlett, a World Walker, refuses to ferry Tessa but warns the gods are manipulating events.
Summary
Tessa, chafing under new restraining bands and Mother Cordelia’s corrections, waits with Theon, Luka, Axel, and Katya for the mysterious pair from the training arena. When Tessa’s magic senses the silver-haired female, Scarlett Sutara Aditya and her husband, Sorin Aditya, arrive, bypassing the townhouse wards and provoking immediate suspicion.
Inside, tense introductions devolve into sniping as Scarlett demonstrates unfamiliar magic, including white fire messaging and living shadows, and claims they hail from another realm. Challenges to Devram’s customs arise: Scarlett rejects Source titles, questions multiple Source Marks, and reveals in her world there is only one Mark. Power flares between Scarlett and Theon until Sorin calms the room.
Pressed for answers, Scarlett states she came for Tessa at the behest of Tessa’s father. She declares Tessa’s father is Temural, god of the wild and untamed, and that their family descends from Arius and Serafina. This contradicts Devram history and Theon’s assumptions about legacy gifts. Scarlett explains differences between darkness and shadows, and attributes her own white flames to Serafina’s line.
The revelations widen: Scarlett is not a Witch but bound by a Bargain to her sister Juliette; her mother is the goddess Saylah. She warns the gods break accords and use mortals as pieces. When Tessa asks to be taken to Temural, Scarlett refuses, saying travel would endanger more than Tessa, though as a rare World Walker she can cross realms.
Theon clings to Devram’s rules—noninterference, legacy limits, Source protocol—but Scarlett insists loopholes exist and that the household is already caught in divine games. The chapter closes with the group reeling: Tessa shaken yet hopeful, Theon angered and destabilized, and Scarlett asserting control over what truths she will share.
