27. Axel

Axel storms the Pantheon after learning Theon took Katya to the archives. He joins their research into Tessa’s lineage and broader lore: Everlasting War origins, Walkers, Sister Goddesses, and a theory that Fae were created to keep balance. Axel briefly encounters a terrifying, ashen-haired woman in the stacks.

At closing, four Augury operatives trap them between aisles, prophesying ruin if Tessa lives and urging sacrifice. Theon rejects them and attacks, killing one masked male. Vines seal the exits, implying a Silas Legacy nearby. When Katya is cut by a gold dagger, Axel snaps, executes a female Augury with his shadows, and is nearly struck before the ashen-haired archer silently saves him and vanishes into ash.

Outside, the archer reveals herself as Auryon. She identifies the gold-blade poison and says only Sargon dragon fire can purge it, not Anala fire. They retreat to the warded townhouse; Luka reluctantly envelops Katya in black dragon fire as she screams in agony. Theon restrains Axel, whose panic and bloodlust surge.

When it’s over, Katya lives but will scar. Axel carries her away, rebuffing Theon’s caution, then accepts a ration bottle Theon leaves as a peace offering. In private, Axel gently tends Katya—cleaning the wound, helping her shower, and staying at her side through the night—ashamed of nearly feeding from her blood.

As Katya rests, Axel reconsiders their research: if the Fae were designed to maintain balance, perhaps they were never meant to serve the Legacy at all—and may have saved them.
