Chapter 12

Seven years earlier, Briony watches Rory and Cordelia’s budding romance leave her increasingly alone. Didion begins escorting her to her rooms and kisses her, but Briony’s response is muted, and she retreats to her studies and the lake for solace.

At the lakeside, Bomardi boys—among them Toven—swim and joke beneath Briony’s window, distracting her. Drawn outside, she discovers Toven has claimed her favorite willow. Their banter hints at Toven’s knowledge of her secret about boosting Rory, establishing leverage and competition.

A contest over the willow escalates: Briony blocks him with magic one day; he arrives first the next. When they race for the tree, Toven trips on a root, cuts his head, and Briony kneels behind him to heal the wound. The intimate proximity heightens their mutual awareness; she deliberately stops short of finishing the heal and claims the tree, leaving him to seek medics.

Still unsettled by her attraction to Toven, Briony returns the next day and lets Didion touch her beneath the willow, eyes closed, imagining Toven. Meanwhile, Rory and Cordelia deepen their relationship, confirming Briony’s isolation and the start of an enduring tension with Toven.
