Florence, newly bound to the dragon Nyxaris, must decide whether to hide from the role forced upon her or claim the power that comes with it. Around them, Kage Tanaka, Regan Drakharrow, Theo, Visha, and others are pushed into uneasy alliances as oppression, plague, rebellion, and dragonfire threaten to consume both Bloodwing and Veilmar.
The book centers on survival under tyranny, consent and coercion, chosen loyalty, inherited power, and the cost of becoming a weapon in someone else’s war.
Plot Summary ⚠️ Spoilers
The story opens with Bloodwing Academy under a shadow. Neville, a perceptive fluffin, senses a malignant presence near the Black Keep, while Viktor Drakharrow consolidates power by marrying Regan and using her brother Persis as leverage. Regan endures Viktor’s abuse to protect Persis and prepares to rule through fear, even as she privately begins to understand that survival may require secrets and small rebellions.
Medra Pendragon returns to academy life haunted by grief, past visions, and recent violence. She witnesses highblood students humiliating the blightborn First Year Dani and intervenes, only for Blake Drakharrow to reappear and take the punch she instinctively throws. Blake is scarred, one-eyed, and changed by vampirism and by his guilt over betraying Medra and Nyxaris. He grieves Aenia, forgives Theo for her death, and admits he went to Viktor, placing him back inside the conflict he hoped to escape.
Viktor’s takeover becomes unmistakable when Headmaster Kim’s severed head is displayed and Regan is installed as headmistress. Under Viktor’s eye, she announces new security measures and a brutal regime of highblood privilege. Her administration brands and restricts blightborn students, creates a coerced blood donation program, and empowers alumni Bloodguards. Faculty including Rodriguez, Allenvale, Stonefist, and Sankara object, but Regan forces the measures through while hiding certain truths from Viktor, especially her Blood Vow with Kage Tanaka after she discovers his secret wolf form.
Bloodwing deteriorates quickly. Rodriguez spirals over his part in betraying Nyxaris. Dani is repeatedly enthralled and fed upon. Medra and Kage exchange vows of secrecy after his wolf-shifting is exposed. Florence hides from school and from her new bond with Nyxaris, resenting that she was saved without consent, but the dragon challenges her to stop hiding after she discovers blightborn students murdered by thrallweave. Florence’s mother reveals that blightborn obedience outside Bloodwing is reinforced by old compulsion magic, and that dragons can break chains.
Blake’s own transformation worsens. He shifts uncontrollably into a red dragon and takes his first flight, escaping Nyxaris only because Molindra’s psychic call distracts the elder dragon. Rodriguez later explains that some dragons were made, that the stone dragons once held back the Veil, and that Blake is suffering from soul-splitting. He gives Blake The Dark Art of Eternal Bonds, which contains a dangerous Twin Hearts spell that may stabilize him or destroy him.
Florence’s importance grows after Viktor invades her mind and exposes her bond to Nyxaris. Nyxaris smashes into Regan’s office, kills Professor Hassan with dragonfire, and claims Florence as his rider. Lady Elaria Avari then warns Florence that Viktor may try to soul-bind her to control Nyxaris and proposes a protective betrothal to Kage. Florence accepts for survival, though she feels no romance for Kage and is increasingly unsettled by intimate dreams and possessive tension with Nyxaris. Medra, meanwhile, dreams of her mother Orcades, whose spirit inhabits the necromantic dragon Molindra in the Bonewood. Orcades reveals that Marcus and Catherine are cracking the Veil for a coming reclamation, while the Bloodmaiden of the Sanctum resists them.
At Kage and Florence’s engagement ball, Blake wrestles with the Twin Hearts spell and hears of a spreading highblood plague that makes victims go feral after bites. Regan halts Bloodguard abuse of Dani, showing buried compassion, and dances with Kage, who admits he intends to end the engagement while still protecting Florence. Kage privately releases Florence from the betrothal, but soon afterward Florence finds the infected Bloodguard Brocklin attacking Neville. Regan intervenes, Nyxaris incinerates Brocklin, and Kage takes Regan and Florence to Avari Tower as the plague spreads.
The outbreak erupts across Bloodwing. Drakharrow Tower and Avari Tower lock down while students and faculty debate containment versus execution. Neville proves able to scent infection, Rodriguez and Healer Elycia study abnormal blood clotting, and Florence prepares a possible mirthleaf antitoxin. Medra learns from Orcades that the sickness resembles an ancient fae plague and may threaten fae-blooded people. When Medra, Blake, and Theo try to reach Florence, Bloodguards led by Quinn, Silvio, and others capture them and take them to Viktor.
Viktor’s true design is revealed in the refectory. He uses infected guards and hostages to force Blake toward transformation, intending Blake’s dragon to burn Veilmar and purge rival highblood lines under cover of plague. Earlier, Blake had attempted a ritual in the Dragon Court with the ancient Inferni Vorago, hoping Vorago would devour the dragon inside him; Vorago destroyed the inner hatchling and seemed to choose death. But in the refectory, Vorago resurfaces through Blake. He mercy-kills Professor Allenvale and the infected Cade with dragonfire, then breaks through the wall and flies toward Veilmar, prioritizing Medra’s survival over the city.
Medra, empowered by Blake’s blood, heals rapidly and duels Viktor, who reveals draconic talons before fleeing at a thunderous roar. In Avari Tower, the others see Veilmar burning under the assault of Blake’s crimson dragon. Florence persuades Nyxaris to intervene and arms herself with Godsbane and emberfern-tipped bolts, while Medra stays behind to defend Bloodwing. Riding Nyxaris with Neville aboard, Florence attacks Vorago over the burning city. Godsbane and emberfern wound him, but the turning point comes when Neville sings a forgotten healing song, calming Vorago and drawing him away toward the sea.
The reprieve ends when Viktor appears as a second tainted Inferni. Florence’s bolt and Nyxaris’s flame cripple his wing, sending him crashing near Peacebringer’s Hill, where Regan and Kage have raced through the ruined city. Viktor still manages to bite Nyxaris’s throat with poisoned fangs. Florence lands the dying dragon and, guided by Neville, packs emberfern into the wound. Neville then erupts with golden healing light, leaving Nyxaris’s fate uncertain.
At Bloodwing, Medra confronts Silvio and House Mortis as they barricade the doors against refugees. She exposes the plague’s dynamics, argues for unity, and, backed by Visha, Lysander, Evie, Rodriguez, Theo, Vaughn, and others, dissolves old house boundaries for those who reject supremacy. The doors are opened to refugees, marking a revolutionary shift inside the academy.
Near the city, Kage battles the wounded Viktor in wolf form. Regan pretends to submit to Viktor to save Kage, then bites Viktor and smears her wolf-marked blood into his wound, unleashing corruption through his dragon blood. Viktor retaliates by slashing Regan’s throat, and Kage shields her collapsing body in grief as Viktor reels from the poison she has planted in him.
After the night’s destruction, Medra finds Blake at dawn on the verge of suicide, convinced that death is the only way to prevent Vorago from killing again. She professes unwavering love and pulls him back, but Vaughn summons Rodriguez and Sankara, who try to chain Blake for everyone’s safety. As the restraints close, Vorago stirs. Blake warns Medra to run, breaks free, transforms, and flies into the sunrise, leaving Medra devastated and the struggle unresolved.

Themes
Briar Boleyn’s The Wings That Bind is driven by the question of what truly binds people: blood, power, fear, love, vows, or chosen loyalty. Across Bloodwing Academy and the burning city beyond it, the novel repeatedly contrasts coercive bonds with liberating ones.
- Power as domination and spectacle. Viktor and Regan’s regime turns hierarchy into public theater: Kim’s head on a spike, the execution of a blightborn servant, discriminatory uniforms, curfews, and the Blood Donation Incentive Program all make oppression visible and ritualized. The school motto scrawled in blood over murdered blightborn students crystallizes the logic of highblood supremacy: obedience is enforced not only by law, but by fear, shame, and magical compulsion.
- Consent versus coercion. The book is obsessed with the ethics of being bound. Thrallweave, soul-binding, forced feeding, and Viktor’s abuse of Regan represent bonds that erase personhood. Against these stand Blood Vows, dragon-rider bonds, and romantic commitments that are meaningful only when chosen. Florence’s anger at being saved into a dragon bond without consent complicates even heroic magic, while Medra’s defense of Dani reframes the conflict around bodily autonomy rather than simple factional loyalty.
- Monstrosity, trauma, and self-mastery. Blake’s transformation into an Inferni externalizes his fear that violence is inside him beyond control. His near-fatal attack on Medra and later devastation of Veilmar make monstrosity painfully literal, yet the novel resists reducing him to the dragon. Similarly, Regan appears tyrannical but is revealed as a survivor wearing chains. Kage’s line distinguishing a monster from someone chained by one becomes a moral key to the book.
- Rebellion through unlikely solidarity. Medra’s leadership grows from refusing false binaries. She protects Dani from both highblood predation and blightborn retaliation, then later opens Bloodwing’s doors to refugees by uniting blightborn, defecting highbloods, and rebellious faculty. Lysander’s Orphos uprising, Visha’s break from Lucian and Evander, and Theo and Vaughn’s public bond all suggest revolution begins when inherited house loyalties fracture.
- Memory, hidden history, and returning consequences. Orcades, Molindra, the Veil, the forgotten dragon histories, and Neville’s ancient healing song all reveal that the present crisis is rooted in buried truths. The axe forgets, but the tree remembers: Bloodwing’s violence is not new, only newly exposed.
Ultimately, the novel argues that survival alone is not freedom. Its characters must decide which bonds will imprison them, which will save them, and which they are willing to remake.
