Chapter 11
Overview
Unable to sleep, Medra is surprised by Blake, and they finally acknowledge a mutual, exclusive bond. Between bouts of intimacy, they discuss Medra’s unusual resistance to thrall, Florence’s new bond with Nyxaris, and Viktor’s looming control. Blake reveals his mother’s disappearance into the Sanctum and past covert aid to blightborn. The chapter ends with a chilling reveal: Blake’s ruined eye opens, glowing red.
Summary
Medra, sleepless and missing Florence and Nyxaris, is startled when Blake arrives unannounced. Their banter shifts into mutual confession: each claims the other, and they consummate their fraught attraction, transforming it into an explicit, exclusive commitment.
Afterward, they discuss Florence’s absence and Nyxaris, with Blake urging Medra to trust Florence and predicting she will return. Neville the fluffin appears, briefly lightening the mood. Talk turns to thrallguard: Blake suggests Medra’s surprising resistance to mental control may stem from their blood bond and warns that if Viktor learns Medra cannot be thralled—and that Florence now rides Nyxaris—Viktor may move to kill Medra and target Florence.
They widen their focus to broader threats: Marcus and Catherine, now with Lunaya, remain at large; Medra doubts their competence but fears the dragon tips the balance. Blake admits he and Rodriguez secretly delivered aid to blightborn in Veilmar, hinting at a more compassionate side. He also reveals his mother, Desdemona, vanished into the Sanctum under Viktor’s shadow, and that she is half-blightborn—a family truth he only recently deduced.
Reaffirming exclusivity and rejecting a triad, Medra and Blake return to intimacy, finding brief solace despite encroaching dangers. As quiet falls, an eerie change shatters the calm: Blake’s ruined eye socket opens and watches Medra, its globe now red as blood, signaling an unknown, ominous intrusion or transformation.
