Summary
Suren, living feral in the mortal woods at fourteen, tends a makeshift camp and comforts her tattered stuffed fox. Remembering childhood play with Rebecca and the roles imposed on princesses, Suren’s solitude is broken by a voice calling her true name.
Oak, now thirteen and worn by rapid growth and court pressures, steps into a clearing. Hiding, Suren challenges his presence. Oak admits he wants to run away from Elfhame, recounting repeated attempts on his life—poisonings and a knife attack—and a plot to place him on the throne by killing Jude and Cardan. He seeks refuge with Suren because she once was royal and fled.
