Chapter 31: Kai
Overview
Kai and Baz break into Clover’s room and confirm a link between Clover and time-related lore when Baz finds an underlined Dark Tides passage about doors to the Deep. Baz safely halts time to avoid discovery, proving growing control. Clover’s friendly, oblivious encounter heightens tension and mystery around his involvement.
Summary
Kai and Baz sneak into Clover’s dorm to look for clues about Clover’s writings and the Hourglass. Baz reluctantly unlocks the door with time magic, and they search quickly while Kai keeps watch in the hall.
They find Clover’s leather journal, matching Baz’s but blank save for Clover’s name and a pressed four-leaf clover. Baz then spots a copy of Dark Tides and discovers an underlined passage about “doors to the Deep,” portals that carry travelers on the tides of time—suggesting Clover may know about time travel and the Hourglass.
When voices approach, Baz freezes time, reads, and replaces the book before pushing Kai out. Time resumes and they sprint away, exhilarated and unseen.
In the courtyard, Clover appears with textbooks and casually thanks them for using his clothes, telling them to keep them. Kai masks his panic, and Baz stays quiet, both hiding that they just raided Clover’s room and that Baz’s command of time saved them.
