Chapter 28: Baz
Overview
Baz and Kai meet Cornus Clover at an Eclipse-rights salon where he challenges Tidelore prejudice and likely Glamours Wulfrid into leaving. Clover invites them to Bicentennial festivities and a secret party. With Cordie’s help they prepare, and Baz restores Clover’s ruined journal. Concluding Clover is pivotal, they plan to follow his lead.
Summary
Baz and Kai arrive late to an Eclipse-rights salon led by a charismatic student speaker who proves to be Cornus (Cornelius) Clover—Baz’s literary idol. Clover argues that Eclipse magic is essential and condemns Purifiers used against the Collapsed. Wulfrid interrupts with Tidelore zealotry; Clover remains calm and appears to compel Wulfrid to leave, hinting at concealed Tidecaller abilities despite publicly claiming Healer magic.
Clover urges attendees to sign a petition banning Purifying practices at Institutes. He greets Baz and Kai, introduces himself as Cordelia (Cordie) Clover’s brother, and decries institutional corruption influenced by Tidelore leaders. Kai questions Clover’s motives; Clover frames his activism as human compassion, while Baz connects details confirming Cordie as the sister mentioned in Clover’s journal.
Talk turns to the Bicentennial games; Clover is competing and invites Baz and Kai to attend and later join an exclusive post-challenge party, advising them to dress well. Thames’s bond with Clover surfaces, and Kai notes his own Nightmare Weaver kinship with Thames. Baz reveals he is a Timespinner, prompting Clover to encourage him to compete, which Baz declines due to the event’s danger.
Cordie escorts them into town, shares her art-school aspirations, and helps them secure suits, offering to cover costs since their belongings were lost at sea. Afterward, Baz and Kai return to Obscura Hall to avoid scrutiny and process meeting Clover.
In the safety of the Eclipse commons, Baz risks using his time magic to reverse water damage on Clover’s journal and the tucked epilogue; the restoration works. Though the writings offer no direct path home, Baz and Kai reason that if Clover truly lived events akin to his novel, he may be the one to open the door they need. They resolve that Clover is their best lead.
