19. The Spigot and the Noose

At the brutal Spigot tavern in Pigdenay, Kinch, Galva, and Norrigal search for westbound passage. After failed approaches to several captains—including an aloof Axaene and a predatory Istrean—they settle on a Molrovan whaler whose boastful captain promises swift, unhindered sailing to Molrova.

Before departure, Kinch heads to Marspur’s Noosefruit Square to steal among the spectators at a triple hanging. He reflects on the beggars and the goddess Cassa’s statue while easily lifting a shabby purse, then eyes richer targets as the sentences proceed.

When the killer is brought forth, Kinch recognizes Deerpants—the straw-haired fighter who escaped their forest ambush. As the noose is set, Deerpants sees Kinch and refuses a hood. Kinch holds her gaze in a moment layered with forgiveness, resignation, and kinship. She drops with a stark, human “ah,” and Kinch, moved, steals a fancy boy’s anklet as a strange tribute.

Before leaving, Kinch exacts a small revenge on power by cantripping a wet sneeze from the duke’s young wife onto Duke Drannigat, then vanishes before any magicker can trace the spell. With passage arranged and petty scores settled, he rejoins his companions to sail for Molrova on the whaler.
