Chapter 5
Overview
Diem saves Princess Lilian from a fatal hidden wound, but the rescue unleashes a mysterious silver healing power that appears to come from Diem rather than from Lily. The miracle draws the suspicion of Lily’s protector, who questions Diem’s identity, her eyes, and possible Fortos connection. Diem denies everything and avoids asking about Auralie, realizing that this dangerous man could expose secrets and threaten her family.
Summary
Princess Lilian collapses, and Diem realizes she missed a grave injury hidden beneath Lily’s gown. A metal shard from the fallen chandelier is lodged in Lily’s lower back, and Lily has been bleeding heavily while everyone focused on her arm. Diem cuts away the gown, gives Lily a clotting potion, removes the shard, and tries to stanch the wound, but the bleeding is too severe.
As Lily’s condition worsens, Diem blames herself for being distracted and thinks of Teller’s affection for Lily. Refusing to let Lily die, Diem orders Lily to fight with all the force Diem can summon. The strange inner voice echoes the command, Diem’s hands tingle with cold and heat, and a hidden silver glow flares beneath the bloody gauze.
Lily suddenly wakes, fully restored. When Diem checks the injury, the wound has vanished completely, leaving no mark. Diem hides the healed skin with the gauze while the surrounding Descended praise their goddess and crowd around Lily, but Diem is shaken because the injury had seemed far beyond mortal healing.
Elric leads Diem toward a washroom, but Diem becomes dizzy in the corridor and struggles to steady herself. Before Diem can wash up, Lily’s unnamed protector stops her and questions how Diem saved Lily. Diem insists she is only a mortal healer, repeats her explanation for her pale eyes, and claims the light came from Lily, not from herself.
The protector remains suspicious, suggesting Diem may be half-mortal and asking whether her father comes from Fortos, which unsettles Diem. Diem wants to ask him about Auralie but decides against it, fearing that involving him could endanger Diem’s family if he is tied to Auralie’s disappearance. When he warns that mortals may not carry weapons in the palace, Diem angrily points out that mortals saved the children rather than harming them.
Diem leaves the confrontation with a cutting reminder that she saved the Descended children. Once Diem reaches the washroom and locks the door, the shock of Lily’s near death, the unexplained magic, and the protector’s suspicions overwhelm Diem, and she collapses into tears.
