Chapter 26
Overview
Diem survives her collapse in the burning armory when a mysterious inner force and strange cold power compel her to keep fighting. Instead of fleeing, Diem rescues two trapped guards, proving that her guilt has not destroyed her capacity to act or choose mercy.
Luther’s arrival turns the rescue into a revelation: Diem can interact with his magic, and their connection triggers a clearer vision of a future battlefield with Luther at her side. The chapter ends on a cliffhanger as the armory roof collapses over Diem just as escape seems possible.
Summary
Diem wakes on the burning armory floor after collapsing and assumes she is dying, but the insistent inner command to fight forces her back to awareness. A cold energy surges through her body, easing her burns and allowing her to breathe despite the smoke. Instead of escaping to the right, Diem turns left toward the trapped survivors after falling debris blocks the safer path.
Diem follows a weak cry and finds two guards in a side room: Perthe, whose hips and legs are crushed beneath a massive fallen beam, and another guard who is unconscious but alive. When fire surges into the room, Diem shields Perthe and sees steam rise from her skin, confirming that something unnatural is protecting her. Though the beam should be impossible to move, Diem draws on desperate strength and shifts it off Perthe.
Because Perthe cannot walk and the other guard cannot wake, Diem improvises by placing Perthe on top of the unconscious man and dragging both men together like a stretcher. The effort nearly breaks her, but each time Diem falters, the inner voice drives her onward. Inch by inch, Diem hauls the two guards through smoke, falling debris, and flames toward the armory entrance.
At the opening, Luther appears and calls to Diem in panic. When Luther’s glowing magic reaches for Diem first, Diem refuses rescue and orders Luther to save the injured guards instead. Diem physically redirects the light around the unconscious guard’s wrists, feeling Luther’s magic flow through her with a strange, silvery resonance, and Luther pulls both men out while others lift the barricading beams.
After the guards are rescued, Diem staggers toward the exit as Luther enters the burning armory. Their eyes meet, and Diem experiences a profound connection followed by a vision of the battlefield she has seen before, now revealing Luther as the shadowed figure beside her. As the vision fades, the roof gives way above Diem; Luther reaches for her, but the rafters fall and everything goes dark.
