CHAPTER X

Overview

On a foggy night before his thirty-second birthday, Dorian encounters Basil and brings him home. Basil confronts Dorian with London’s rumors and begs for a denial. Stung and exultant, Dorian vows to show Basil his “soul” upstairs—the portrait—drawing Basil into the core secret that defines Dorian’s corruption.

Summary

On November 7, the night before his thirty-second birthday, Dorian Gray leaves Lord Henry’s and, in the fog, encounters Basil Hallward rushing to catch a midnight train to Paris. Basil insists on speaking with Dorian and follows him into his library, despite the late hour.

Once inside, Basil explains he has heard shocking rumors about Dorian—whispers of ruined reputations, suicides, scandalized women, and sordid haunts—and pleads for a denial. He cites specific names and consequences, insisting that a gentleman must care for his reputation and demanding clarity.

Dorian deflects with cynicism, but Basil presses, saying he cannot reconcile Dorian’s innocent face with such accusations and that to judge the truth he would need to see Dorian’s soul. This suggestion horrifies Dorian yet triggers a proud, vengeful impulse.

Dorian declares he will show Basil his “soul” that very night, seizing a lamp and insisting Basil witness the source of his corruption. Basil, shaken but devoted, agrees, missing his train and asking only for a plain answer. Dorian promises it upstairs, leading him toward the hidden portrait.
