CHAPTER III

Overview

Dorian visits Lord Henry and confesses an all-consuming love for the young actress Sibyl Vane, vowing to elevate her career and arranging for Lord Henry and Basil to see her perform. Lord Henry observes his influence over Dorian with clinical fascination. The chapter ends with Dorian’s sudden telegram announcing his engagement to Sibyl, escalating stakes for all involved.

Summary

A month after receiving his portrait, Dorian waits for Lord Henry in his Curzon Street library. Lady Henry (Victoria) briefly enters, nervously chatting about music and society before leaving. Lord Henry arrives, trades aphorisms on marriage, and prompts Dorian to reveal he is in love with a young actress, Sibyl Vane.

Dorian recounts how, seeking sensation after Lord Henry’s ideas, he wandered east, entered a shabby theatre run by a fawning manager, and saw Sibyl as Juliet. Despite the tawdry production, Sibyl’s beauty and voice overwhelmed him. He returns nightly, enthralled by her performances as Shakespearean heroines, and finally meets her backstage, finding her innocent and childlike.

Pressed by Lord Henry about his intentions, Dorian declares Sibyl “sacred,” vows to make her love him, and outlines plans to free her from her contract and launch her properly in the West End. He insists Henry and Basil attend Juliet the next evening, demanding an early start to witness the first act.

After Dorian leaves, Lord Henry privately exults in Dorian’s transformation and ponders the psychology of passion, experience, and his own experiment upon Dorian’s character. Late that night, Lord Henry receives a telegram from Dorian announcing his engagement to Sibyl Vane, abruptly raising the emotional and social stakes.
