Overview

Holden sneaks into his parents’ apartment and wakes Phoebe for a secret visit. Their affectionate reunion turns tense when Phoebe deduces he’s been expelled. Fearing their parents’ reaction, Phoebe panics and hides, while Holden floats vague plans to leave for the West, exposing his deep aimlessness and isolation.

Summary

Holden returns to his apartment building late at night and, aided by a new and gullible elevator boy, rides up by pretending he’s visiting the neighbors, the Dicksteins. After the doors close, Holden slips into his own apartment quietly, mindful of his mother’s light sleep, and tiptoes toward Phoebe’s room.

Finding Phoebe asleep in D.B.’s larger room, Holden watches her fondly, explores her neat belongings and school notebooks, and feels momentarily content. He wakes her gently, and Phoebe greets him with excited affection, immediately peppering him with news about her school play and their parents being out late at a party.

They talk warmly about a movie Phoebe saw, the broken record Holden brought her, and D.B.’s Hollywood work. The mood shifts when Phoebe, noticing Holden’s early return, astutely presses him about being home before Wednesday and realizes he’s been expelled. Distressed, she hits his leg, repeats that their father will “kill” him, then buries her head under a pillow.

Holden tries to calm Phoebe, insisting no one will kill him and proposing he might leave to take a job on a ranch out West. Phoebe refuses to emerge or be reasoned with, fixated on their parents’ reaction. Exhausted by the stalemate and anxious about being discovered, Holden steps out to the living room to pocket more cigarettes, leaving Phoebe still hiding under the pillow.
