Chapter Thirty-Eight
Overview
Kieran saves Poppy, and Casteel heals her by making her drink his blood, revealing its Atlantian power and triggering intense arousal he resists. In the aftermath, Poppy realizes Hawke is Prince Casteel. Feeling utterly betrayed, she rejects his plans to trade her for Malik and stabs Casteel through the heart.
Summary
Kieran lifts a fading Poppy from the cell as Hawke—revealed by Kieran’s slip as Casteel—urges her to live. Facing her rapid decline, Casteel bites his wrist and compels Poppy to drink his blood. The blood tastes intoxicating, heals her grievous wounds, and floods her with warmth and clarity.
As sensation returns, Casteel explains Atlantian blood’s healing properties and admits to using compulsion to save her. He assures her she won’t turn vampry from so little blood and hints at forbidden aspects of such turning. The blood also sparks overwhelming arousal, but Casteel restrains himself, warning Poppy she lacks control and would regret anything done under its influence.
Regaining control, Poppy questions Naill and Delano and then confronts the danger from those who attacked her. Casteel vows retribution and reiterates his intent to trade her to the Queen for his brother Malik’s freedom, promising no further harm to her.
Kieran’s use of Casteel’s true name triggers Poppy’s realization: Hawke is Prince Casteel Da’Neer, the Dark One in legend. Connecting past clues, she recognizes the depth of his deception. Shattered by the lies and deaths tied to his actions, Poppy lashes out physically as Casteel endures her blows.
Spotting the bloodstone dagger used against her, Poppy succumbs to anguish and betrayal. She turns and drives the blade into Casteel’s chest, burying it to the hilt over his heart, leaving him shocked and bleeding as her grief crystallizes into violent rejection.
