Chapter Twenty-Eight
Overview
Poppy clashes with Hawke over bringing Tawny but concedes when Tawny admits she can’t fight and would endanger the mission. Hawke asserts command, orders no veil, and prepares a minimal escort. At dawn, Poppy departs Masadonia disguised and unveiled; Hawke returns her dagger, introduces Kieran, and they begin the perilous journey.
Summary
In Poppy’s chambers, she and Hawke argue over taking Tawny on the journey to Carsodonia. Commander Jansen confirms Hawke leads the small escort as Poppy’s Royal Guard. Hawke cites the dangers beyond the Rise—Descenters, the Barren Plains, and the Blood Forest—as reasons Tawny cannot come.
Tawny speaks for herself, admitting she cannot fight and would distract protection from Poppy. Poppy recognizes she is resisting because Tawny is her last link to what was familiar and fears not seeing her again. She concedes, and Hawke adds further instructions: pack lightly and do not bring the veil.
At dawn near the Rise, Poppy, disguised in plain clothes and unveiled, savors the air on her face and reflects on leaving, the Duchess’s absence, and her loss of faith. She acknowledges Vikter’s claim that she secretly hopes to be found unworthy.
Hawke arrives dressed as a commoner and teases about riding together since Poppy cannot ride. He gives her back her cherished dagger—Vikter’s gift—explaining he recovered it and believes she’ll need it. The gesture steadies Poppy as she arms herself.
A small escort assembles: familiar guards Phillips and Airrick among them, and Kieran, who traveled from the capital and knows the route. With Kieran urging haste, Hawke asks if Poppy is ready. She looks back at Masadonia and forward to the unknown, then turns toward the Rise as the group departs.
