Chapter Seven
Overview
Summary
Cal hikes up the mountain Tuesday morning, timing his visit so Trey is at football and Rushborough is still hungover. He confronts Johnny Reddy and demands in on the gold scheme, offering three hundred euros. Johnny tries to deflect, claiming the scheme is Ardnakelty-only and even pretending the salting story was a joke, but Cal threatens to bring Officer O'Malley into it. When Johnny obliquely threatens to bar Trey from Cal's company, Cal pushes back hard. Johnny refuses the cash, telling Cal to give it to Mart Lavin, since Johnny is keeping his hands clean of the money.
Lena, having been avoiding Noreen and Cal, finally hears about the gold scheme when she brings Cal a jar of mustard for lunch. She learns Cal has bought in and intends to stay close to watch over Trey. Lena privately concludes that Johnny must owe dangerous people in London, and worries the danger could follow him to Ardnakelty, but withholds the speculation from Cal. She decides to invite Trey to stay with her. Cal, uneasy about the heat wave, recalls how prolonged heat used to precede violent crime on the job.
That night at the Reddy house, Trey overhears her parents arguing after Rushborough's strained dinner visit. Johnny storms out and rants to Trey about Sheila's lack of faith. Trey fetches him whiskey and plays the supportive daughter, telling him she has faith in him. She pumps him for information and learns the gold will arrive at Mart Lavin's the next day and be planted in the river before dawn the day after. She volunteers to surveil Rushborough to keep him away from the river, and Johnny, drunk and grateful, agrees.
Trey reflects that she's learning to work people sideways from her father, and is surprised at how easily Johnny himself is taken in. She feels only a cold spark of victory.
