Chapter Twenty-One
Overview
Summary
Cal throws Trey into the car and drives down the smoke-choked mountain. When a fire engine blocks the road, Trey directs him onto a hidden track she knows. As they descend, Trey tells Cal she went to Detective Nealon with Lena and recanted her story, saying she saw no one but her father that night. Cal, too exhausted for anger, is mostly relieved she's alive. Trey asks to come to his house instead of Lena's, and Cal agrees, fighting tears.
At Lena's, Sheila and the younger children settle in. Maeve quiets Liam by getting him to brush the dogs. When Cal finally calls, he tells Lena that Trey has minor injuries, the Reddy house is gone, and Johnny has fled with cash Cal gave him. They tacitly agree to let people believe Johnny may have died in the fire, which suits Nealon's case against him. Sheila accepts the news calmly, already planning a future without Johnny, and shares a moment of laughter with Lena.
At Cal's place, he feeds a ravenous Trey and tells her he won't ask about her choices; she can share what she wants. While Trey showers, Mart Lavin stops by, pleased Cal made it back. Mart confirms the cover story that Johnny started the fire by accident and perished trying to save Trey. He triumphantly produces his lost orange bucket hat, recovered from Cal's zombie scarecrow, exonerating Senan and leaving the planter's identity an open mystery. Mart notes rain is coming and welcomes Cal as a true local now.
Trey, clean and at peace, joins Cal at the wall to watch the fire crown the mountain. She privately regards the blaze as Brendan's funeral pyre and accepts that she'll never find his body. She feels her debt to Cal cleared by giving him her revenge, placing their relationship on new footing. Cal promises to buy her new jeans tomorrow and texts Lena to bring Banjo. Rain begins to fall as they stand together, watching the fire and the lit windows of neighbors keeping vigil.
