Chapter Fourteen

Overview

Trey discovers Rushborough murdered at the fork in the mountain road and goes immediately to Cal rather than her father. Cal confirms Trey wasn't involved, examines the scene, and calls the Guards. Johnny appears, feigns shock, and rushes off—likely to retrieve the camera Rushborough had confiscated, on which Trey had secretly filmed Cal helping salt the river. Trey's strange calm and her shifted allegiance toward Cal signal that Rushborough's death has freed her from her father's grip.

Summary

At dawn, Trey finds the dead body at the fork in the mountain road. At first she thinks it is her father, Johnny, but on closer inspection she realizes it is Rushborough, his head bashed in and shirt soaked with blood. Banjo had howled to alert her. Trey squats by the body for a long time, processing it as part of the mountain rather than as a person, and recognizes that Rushborough's death liberates her from having to work around her father's plans. Rushborough's phone rings in his pocket, prompting her to leave and head straight to Cal's.

Cal, who has been restless waiting for Monday—the deadline he gave Johnny to leave—is making breakfast when Trey arrives and reports the death. He immediately turns off the stove, grabs latex gloves, and drives her back to the scene. On the way, Cal asks directly whether Trey was involved, telling her honestly that if she were, he would dump the body in a ravine; if not, they would call the Guards. Trey grins and confirms she only found him. Cal advises her not to mention the gold to police unless they bring it up.

At the scene, Cal examines Rushborough: the back of his head is caved in, blood has soaked the dirt but not enough for the kill site, and lividity indicates he was moved shortly after death. Malachy Dwyer's loose sheep have trampled the area, conveniently destroying tracks and scent. Cal calls 999. He notes Trey's unusual calm and that she came to him rather than Johnny, sensing something has shifted in her. Trey chooses Cal as her adult for the police interview.

Johnny appears on the road, shaved and hurrying somewhere, and is visibly shocked by the body—though Cal doesn't trust his reaction. Johnny tries to send Trey home and warns her to say nothing about the gold, then continues up the path toward Rushborough's rented cottage, presumably to retrieve incriminating evidence. Trey reveals to Cal that Rushborough had taken the camera she used to film Cal and the men salting the river with gold; she had filmed it intending to show Rushborough so he would leave. She and Cal reconcile over his earlier failure to tell her about the river plant. As the Guards' car arrives, Cal grasps the magnitude of what is now coming.
