Overview

Trapped overnight in a crashed car during a snowstorm, Eddie and young Daphne conserve heat, problem-solve, and keep calm through songs and jokes. At dawn, Eddie concludes Daphne must seek help. After debating the space blanket, he instructs her to say he is her father. Daphne bravely climbs out to find rescue, crystallizing their bond and Eddie’s conflicted loyalties.

Summary

Through a freezing night in January 1980, Eddie and young Daphne lie pinned in a crashed Chevrolet, sharing a space blanket Buddy Zabriskie once stocked. Eddie wrestles with fear, fantasies of survival, and conflicting desires—leave Skip, honor Abigail and Leda, or live openly—while keeping Daphne warm and hopeful.

They manage basic needs by urinating into cups, trading songs to steady nerves. Daphne nimbly moves through the car in darkness, proving calm and capable. Eddie hides his fear the engine could ignite and refuses to try the heater. At first light, new snowfall buries their tracks and dims visibility.

Realizing no one will find them, Eddie lays out a plan: Daphne must climb out, reach the farmhouse or road, and flag help. He counters her stranger-danger training by arguing most people will help and warns her about the hill. Daphne scouts conditions through the window and reports heavy snow and trees.

They argue over the space blanket—Eddie insists she take it for warmth and visibility; Daphne refuses, prioritizing Eddie’s survival. Before leaving, Eddie asks her to tell rescuers he is her father. Daphne declares she will come back to save him and climbs out into the snowy woods, leaving Eddie terrified yet trusting her courage.
