Overview
In 1980, Eddie drives Daphne off a mountain road; both are injured but alive and stranded overnight. Daphne locates Buddy’s emergency kit, and together they stabilize her head wound and keep warm. Eddie tells Mary Carter’s story of Whistler, a horse who returns to save her, which reassures Daphne they will survive and deepens their bond.
Summary
On a winter night in 1980 near Winchester, Massachusetts, Eddie misses a curve and the car plummets through trees. Daphne, hanging from her seat belt, checks for injuries at Eddie’s urging; Eddie’s ankle and shoulder are badly hurt, and Daphne’s head is bleeding. With Abigail at the hospital for Leda’s appendicitis, no one expects them home.
Daphne frees herself, aggravating Eddie’s pain, then locates the passenger visor light. She methodically inventories the car, recovers her hat and mittens, and retrieves Buddy Zabriskie’s long-ignored emergency duffel from the wayback. Using its supplies—flashlight, medical kit, water, and a space blanket—Eddie cleans and bandages Daphne’s head and they huddle together to keep warm, wary of animals outside.
To steady Daphne’s fear, Eddie recounts a nonfiction proposal he read about Mary Carter, a Wyoming rancher whose horse Whistler runs after lightning spooks her. Alone and grievously injured, Mary is visited by her dead dog Sparky, her friend Susan, her father, and her son Jeffrey. Prompted to whistle, Mary eventually calls Whistler back.
Whistler returns, lies down so Mary can painfully mount, and carries her toward home. The story’s endurance, love, and rescue reassure Daphne and Eddie that they, too, will make it through the night, strengthening their closeness amid uncertainty.
