XV. Crimson and Gold
Overview
Brynne finds Gabriel bloodied over the weakened Phoebe and attacks, triggering a destructive fight across the Cradle. Phoebe’s duskdancer blood gives Gabriel impossible strength, revealing why the Dyvok have advanced so quickly: the golden vial contains empowered wealdling blood.
After Gabriel saves Brynne from the collapsing statue of Lánis, Phoebe turns the chaos into proof of betrayal. By exposing the vial and denouncing the Dyvok truce, Phoebe shifts the clans from suspicion and division toward the possibility of war.
Summary
Gabriel resumes his account by explaining that Brynne’s attack was understandable: Phoebe lay naked, bleeding, and weakened on the furs while Gabriel had Phoebe’s blood on his mouth and fangs. Brynne interprets the scene as an assault and hurls Gabriel through the tower wall, beginning a violent brawl that crashes down into the Elderhold.
As Brynne keeps attacking, Gabriel discovers that Phoebe’s blood has filled Gabriel with unnatural strength and ferocity. Gabriel throws Brynne through pillars and walls, breaks weapons with bare hands, and scatters moonsmaidens and duskdancers who rush to defend the Cradle. Gabriel tries to call for peace, but the clans see only a half-vampire desecrating their sacred site and overpowering their people.
Keylan, the Red Wrath, joins the fight, and Gabriel realizes the scale of Gabriel’s sudden power: Gabriel is holding off the entire moot unarmed. In the frame conversation, Jean-François identifies the cause as Phoebe’s duskdancer blood, connecting it to earlier moments when even a few drops from Phoebe or Brynne had made Gabriel stronger than expected.
Gabriel throws Keylan into the stone effigy of Lánis, cracking the moon goddess statue and causing it to topple. When Brynne lies helpless in the statue’s path, Gabriel rushes in and saves Brynne from being crushed, though the impact shatters stone and throws the Cradle into further outrage. The gathered clans prepare to kill Gabriel, but Phoebe intervenes from atop the fallen statue.
Phoebe holds up Gabriel’s bandolier and recites the prophecy, matching its images to the night’s events: dead rising, ruined weald, roaring lions, weeping angels, and sinners’ hands holding secrets. Phoebe produces the golden vial once worn by a Wolfmother, and Gabriel explains that it contains duskdancer blood, whose power has increased since the fall of daysdeath and the corruption of the wealdlings’ nature.
Phoebe uses the vial as proof that the Dyvok and their allies have betrayed the Moonsthrone. Phoebe declares that a truce with traitors is worthless, names the Dead and the fall of Dún Maergenn, and tells the gathered clans that Godlings have been found. Phoebe ends by naming what the revelation demands: war.
